Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law on ratification of the protocol on Russia's accession to the World Trade Organization (Federal Law of 21.07.2012 # 126-FZ). Negotiations of Russia’s membership in the WTO lasted for 18 years. Protocol of Accession was signed in December 2011.
New Federal Law comes into effect on August 3rd, 2012, and protocol on Russia's accession to the WTO – on August 23rd, 2012. Thus, on August 23rd, 2012, Russia will become a WTO member.
Among the key legal consequences to the field of intellectual property that this event leads to is the adherence to the TRIPS Agreement (Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights) and the ability to use more or less extensive law enforcement (including judiciary) practices related to TRIPS and developed by the countries - members of the WTO since 1994.
